(Part 5) The Importance of Sunscreen in Skin Care

Sunscreens are a preventative health practice that is safe, economical, and can greatly reduce your chances of developing skin cancer. Sunscreen also protects your skin from looking weathered and aged before its time.

Natural sunscreens use a physical barrier such as zinc oxide or titanium oxide to block UV rays. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and neutralise them in the skin tissues.

Many individuals do not feel they appear vital and healthy unless they have a suntan. It is nearly impossible to reverse the signs of early ageing. Expensive lotions, creams and vitamins will not rejuvenate skin that has been suntanned for numerous years and damaged.

UVA and UVB rays are in the air all the time, and unfortunately we cannot see them. These rays reflect from glass, sand, water and concrete, exposing them to us even more.  Therefore, everyone should use a sunscreen with a broad protection of at least 30+ which protect skin against UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays penetrate deeper in to the dermis and break down collagen and elastin fibers, causing wrinkles and DNA mutations to occur in the skin cells. These mutations lead to cancer. UVB rays are the burning rays. Exposure to the sun thickens the skin and a tan is a sign of sun-injury. Sunscreen can protect the skin from these harmful effects of these premature ageing and cancer.

Even though people require 15 minutes of exposure to the sun everyday for an adequate vitamin D supply for healthy bones and teeth, any more than that becomes detrimental. As well as premature ageing, sun exposure also causes skin cancer, and Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world. Because of this sunscreen is now essential to prevent these skin cancers and sun damage to skin.

Thousands of individuals die each year from skin cancer. Education about the sun and its harmful effects on the skin is being taught to children so they can protect their health and not repeat the mistakes of earlier generations. Attitudes are slowly changing as society realizes that the sun is something we should protect our skin from, and we should no longer be trying to soak it up. Those who want a tan are slowly turning to self-tanning lotions and spray on tans.

(Part 4) The Importance of Vitamin E in Skin Care

Vitamin E (chemical name tocopherol) is one of the most well known and researched antioxidants, both when taken orally and when used in skincare products. It is fat-soluble and available in various forms, with the most biologically active being Alpha-Tocopherol. Some of its capabilities when applied topically include:

Protects the epidermis from early stages of ultraviolet light damage
Increases the efficacy of active sunscreen ingredients
Reduces the formation of free radicals upon skin exposure to UVA rays and other sources of skin stress
Prevents the oxidation of fats, a leading source of cell membrane damage in the body
Reduces trans-epidermal water loss from skin and strengthens the skin's barrier function
Protects the skin barrier's oil (lipid) balance during the cleansing process
Reduces the severity of sunburn

Clearly, various forms of vitamin E are major players as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. When it comes to antioxidants, there are internal benefits from dietary or supplement consumption and external benefits from topical application. As important as vitamin E is for skin, it is best used in combination with other antioxidants, including vitamin C, green tea, coenzyme Q10, and many others.

Vitamin E is one of those vitamins that does not cause any disease by its deficiency in the body, but even a small amount of this vitamin is hugely beneficial for the immune system as its strong antioxidant properties protect any part of the body which might be susceptible to oxidative damage.

Vitamin E regulates the retinol level in humans. Retinol, which is a derivative of vitamin A, is essential for healthy skin, mucous membranes and proper vision. Decreases in retinol levels cause the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids in the cell, which causes toxic effects in the cell. Vitamin E curbs this oxidation process and restores normal levels of retinol.

Vitamin E provides an essential function in cellular respiration of all muscles and is vital in the production of biological energy. It also strengthens capillary walls, provides nourishment to cells and protects red blood cells from destruction by toxins in the blood.w
It is necessary to have some amount of fat in our diet to help absorb vitamin E. Unfortunately, the fad of losing weight has been making people cut fat from their diet drastically. Such people may get the desired figure, but the effects of loss of vitamin E are obvious from their dry skin and damaged hair. The deficiency of vitamin E results in dry skin, easy bruising, eczema, psoriasis, PMS, poor wound healing and hot flushes.

Vitamin E is one of those ingredients that pack so much power, it can be found in just about any beauty and skincare product… and with good reason. This antioxidant, fat-soluble vitamin can treat everything from anti-aging woes to scars and other skin conditions. Luckily, this wonder ingredient isn't hard to come by and can be used on a daily basis for better skin and better health (Seacra Enterprises Inc., © 2010).

(Part 3) The Importance of Vitamin C in Skin Care

The purpose behind any real skin care is to give you that younger, fresher look every day.  Its goal is to rejuvenate the skin in such a way that its earlier glow and health are maintained.  One of the most important vitamins for skin care is Vitamin C.

Found naturally in the human body and with some of the highest botanical sources from Kakadu Plum, Blackcurrants and Cranberries. Vitamin C has become the most popular and controversial cosmeceutical ingredient in recent years.

L-Ascorbic Acid commonly known as Chirally Correct Vitamin C, is an essential ingredient in many skin care products and recognised for its ability to protect skin against oxidative damage.  It's known to have photo protective effects on the skin and has shown to decrease UVB induced erythema (i.e. sunburn) and improve the appearance of sun-damaged skin.  As an antioxidant, Vitamin C helps the skin protect itself against the effects of the sun and then also helps repair the damage already done throughout your lifetime. However, it is important to note that although vitamin C boosts the efficacy of sunscreen, it should not be used as a substitute for a good sun block with a high SPF.

As we age, our body's ability to produce collagen decreases, so a supplement that helps the body produce more collagen is great when trying to combat the effects of aging.  Simply by growing older there is a natural reduction of the production of collagen in the body, and this is revealed by the appearance of wrinkles on the skin.  Vitamin C stimulates the growth of collagen, a substance that gives structure and strength to your skin, which in turn significantly improves skin texture, fine lines, wrinkles, skin laxity and decrease sallowness.  It is also known to have anti-inflammatory properties, so it can be used to treat a variety of inflammatory conditions thus strengthen skin's barrier response.

It significantly improves skin clarity, so is used in the treatment and maintenance of several pigmentation disorders such as Melasma , sun spots and general prevention of unwanted discolouration.

It is essential to understand the importance for vitamin C to be able to effectively evaluate products and product stability. Though often unstable in many forms and derivatives, it is evident that vitamin C has a synergistic effect with vitamin E, working hand in hand by protecting and repairing free-radical attacked vitamin E antioxidants, enabling more efficient scavenging.

(Part 2) The Importance of Vitamin A in Skin Care

Vitamin A has been claimed to visibly reverse the ageing process and is often referred to as the “anti-ageing vitamin”. Found naturally not only in the human body, but also in plant material such as carrots and pumpkin, this oil soluble, bright yellowy-orangeextract is often used in cosmeceutical formulations in the form of Retinoids, or Vitamin A derivatives. Vitamin A is essential for the generation and function of healthy cells to prevent dryness and infection.

Cosmeceutical formulations with Vitamin A for topical application on the skin have great anti-ageing, as well as superb anti-oxidant and moisturising capabilities to help promote a softer smoother skin. Vitamin A's powerful therapeutic potential in the management of various skin conditions and has a host of positive effects on the skin, which includes:

Increase the activity of enzymes found in the skin.
Stimulating the growth of new and better quality cells in the epidermis, thereby thickening the outer layer of the skin (which becomes thinner with ageing). It also helps in wound healing and normalisation of damaged cells.
Stimulating dermal collagen formation in the skin, increasing the elasticity and stretchability of the skin, while also assisting is angiogenesis (formation of blood vessels)
Reduces UV-induced wrinkle formation and dead cell build up.
Assists in the reduction of excessive sebum (oil) production, decreasing acne.

As an anti-aging medium, many studies have demonstrated that once-daily topical application of Vitamin A on the skin will reduce wrinkles, fine lines and photo aging symptoms such as brown blemishes and age/sun spots that appear on your skin during your 30's and 40's, a legacy left from the tanning years. It also increases overall skin thickness, improved hydration, better skin tone and pigmentation.

While Vitamin A in cosmeceutical formulations help exfoliate, revitalise and form the skin's surface, it is also used to treat a variety of conditions including acne, rosacea and sun damaged skins. As a metabolic regulator, Vitamin A normalises the cellular chemical process that produces energy and growth, thus targeting mutations within the skin and attempting to correct the imbalance. Like a mechanic who services a car to ensure the smooth running, Vitamin A finds and attempts to fix any running issues within the skin.

So if you're aiming to look younger, use topical application of Vitamin A cream or lotion  once daily, preferably at night. Highly recommended and excellent anti-ageing products with vitamin A and AHA's are Priori Skin Renewal, Priori Facial Perfection Gel, Priori Smooth Lines, Priori Eventones, Skinstitut Retinol. Talk to your skin therapist at Renajo Skin Clinic as to the ideal corrector with vitamin A for your skin type and condition.  Next issue: Vitamin C

(Part 1) The Skin's Ageing Process & 5 Top Anti-Ageing Ingredients

Causes of Aging Skin

A number of factors contribute to our apparent age throughout our lives. Genetic inheritance is important, as is the way our skin has been treated throughout our lifetime. Young, radiant skin has a healthy look that, as we get older, begins to fade as the skin loses its ability to retain moisture. The network of Collagen and elastin that support the skin degrade. The rate at which our skin sheds old cells slows down. The production of the natural pigment melanin can become uneven. The natural substances, which help the skin retain moisture, are reduced, causing it to become drier. The skin thus becomes drier, loses elasticity and begins to show the effects of constant exposure to the environment.

The natural substances, which help the skin retain moisture, are reduced, causing it to become drier. The skin thus becomes drier, loses elasticity and begins to show the effects of constant exposure to the environment.

Some of the skin changes that accompany aging are natural, like the genes we inherit. This is known as the “intrinsic aging” process. Damage caused by environmental factors, such as exposure to UV, pollution, dehydration, poor diet, stress, repetitive facial expressions, gravity and smoking are known collectively as “extrinsic aging” process. All these changes result in a range of visible signs of aging that include lines and wrinkles, uneven texture, uneven tone, a dull appearance, age spots and blotches, photo damage, visible pores and an overall increase in dryness. The top 5 proven anti ageing ingredients are:

1.Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA)
2.Vitamin A
3.Vitamin C
4.Vitamin E
5.Sunscreen (SPF)

Part 1  Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA)

For centuries, AHA's have been used to reverse the aging process to promote a more youthful, fresh looking complexion, before their effectiveness was recognized by modern science. Cleopatra used Alpha Hydroxy Acids (Lactic Acid) when she bathed in milk, and was renowned for her beauty and youthful looks! Noble European ladies pampered their bodies with wine baths to have silky smooth and youthful glowing skin!

AHA, also known as Alpha Hydroxy Acid, is a naturally occurring, non-toxic acid found in basic food, fruits and the human body. Following are the natural sources of commonly available alpha hydroxy acids:

Glycolic acid: Sugar cane
Lactic acid: Sour milk
Citric Acid: Lemons and oranges
Malic acid: Apples
Tartaric acid: Grapes

Natural Chemical Exfoliators

The skin is made up of three layers - the epidermis, the dermis and the subcutaneous (also known as the Hypodermis) layers as seen in the diagram below.

Throughout all stages of life, the top layer of the skin is continually being worn away and replaced by new cell growth. About every 28 days the top layer of the skin needs to be exfoliated - or removed. AHA's work by dissolving the glue that binds skin cells together. These dead cells then simply wash away to reveal fresh new cells giving the appearance of fresher, more youthful looking skin! The higher the percentage of the AHA in a solution, the deeper through the skin's level the AHA's will penetrate and quicker the loosening of the skin cells occur. This helps exfoliate the build up of superficial dead skin cells of the epidermis.  At the cellular level, AHA's stimulate the fibroblasts in the dermis to increase the production of collagen and elastin, thus making the ground substance of the dermis thicker.  Hyperpigmentation is an increase in melanin which causes dark patches or spots on the skin. AHA's help shed these darkened cells at a faster rate, preparing the new skin for more effective penetration of treatment products that can lighten skin, and decrease melanin production by inhibiting the enzymes responsible for melanin synthesis, resulting in an even skin tone. The overall effect of these actions is to even out the skin texture and tone by reducing the wrinkles, removing the dry, flaky, dead superficial skin layers and improving the color, firmness and elasticity of the skin, providing a more youthful facial complexion at the.
